Kdybych měl jedním slovem charakterizovat práci rakouského malíře Gottfrieda Helnweina, stačila by mi na to pouhá tři písmena – ZLO. Zlo ve všech možných jeho podobách a tvarech. Zlo, které je současně odpuzující i přitažlivé, každodenní, samozřejmé, přirozené … „takzvané zlo“.
Přestože je Helnwein především malířem, lze v jeho rané tvorbě vysledovat silný vliv tzv. Vídeňského akcionismu – uměleckého hnutí, které sdružovalo performery, fotografy a filmaře a jež se ve svých projevech zabývalo hojně tématy sexu a násilí (Schwarzkogler, Nitzch, Brus, Kren). Dá se říci, že Helnwein přenesl antiumělecké brutální akcionistické propriety nazpět do sféry konzervativněji posazeného umění a také uměleckého trhu (potenciál komodifikovatelnosti olejomalby pochopitelně značně přesahuje komerční možnosti performance). ...

V zrcadlovkách a s šátkem kolem hlavy připomíná Helnwein - výtvarník, performer a také majitel starého irského hradu, kde si celebrity podávají kliku - nějakou zazobanou rockovou star. Nereflektovaná minulost, jež nepřetržitě prorůstá do současnosti a způsobuje úzkost, je Helnweinovým hlavním tématem. Expozice jeho hyperrealistické, za fotografii lehko zaměnitelné malby i fotografií pokračuje v dramaturgické psychologizující linii výstav Galerie Rudolfinum. Gottfried HelnweinHelnweinova tvorba má i silný politický přesah. Malíř se počátkem 70. let zařadil mezi vídeňské akcionisty, kteří kritizovali rakouskou kolektivní amnézii ve vztahu k fašistické minulosti země. Hnutí nezávislých politicky angažovaných umělců se snažila státní moc potlačit, revoltující akcionisty třeba na čas uvěznila či v krajním případě vyhnala do exilu. Při performancích akcionistů tenkrát třeba tekla krev a po zemi se válely vnitřnosti. Dnes je vídeňský akcionismus nejznámějším ryze rakouským avantgardním uměleckým směrem. ...

Koncepčně formulovaná výstava malířského díla rakouského umělce Gottfrieda Helnweina (nar. 1948) s akcentováním pěti okruhů silných témat, jimiž se proslavil – portréty - tváře, násilí na dětech, nacismus, „Art in Amerika“ a metaforické portréty zpěváka Marilyna Mansona.
Výstava Angels Sleeping sleduje základní témata díla rakouského umělce Gottfrieda Helnweina (nar. 1948 ve Vídni). Autor se stal záhy pojmem v oblasti hyperrealistické malby, v zobrazení osamělého a zraňovaného člověka. Četné citáty z popkultury, fotograficky přesné detaily často monochromní, povrchově hladké, precizní malby navozují pocit podivné směsi důvěrně známého a jasně čitelného v kontrastu k tušené hrozbě, k nejasnému pocitu vyšinutí řádu, jež ohrožuje. Gottfried Helnwein's classic yet unnerving images transform sentimental representations of childhood into portraits of individual subjects frozen at the moment of suffering. His photo-paintings pirouette on the fine line between chocolate box pictures/excessive sentimentality and the cost to children of being treated as commodities, of suffering emotional or physical pain at a grown-up's hands.
High pictorial and technical values create compositions that recall contemporary cinema and seventeenth-century painting, expanding the treatment of time into epic. This apparent grandiosity plays against the immediacy of each suffering subject, underlining the different experience of time in childhood. Small hurts can devastate when you're a child. Big hurts stay with you for years, as survivors of Hitler's Anschluss testify.
Now, in the age of virtual use and abuse of children, Helnwein's insistence on valuing the humanity and charm of the littlest, the least powerful, offers a counterpoint to claims that suffering counts most when you're grown-up. It opens his practice into a series of pictorial mise-en-scènes, as did Rembrandt's tableaux in The Blinding of Samson (1636) or The Night Watch (1642). ...

Una simple manifestación artística que permite hacer de una sola imagen algo que sea comprendido por la mayoría. El llanto de un niño es un símbolo universal en el que su comprensión no necesita de idiomas, ni idiosincrasias, es por eso que el arte de Helnwein legitima esta experiencia, porque de entrada el centrarse en el ser humano mantiene una sola lectura; la del ser humano; cualquier dolor y sensación es conocida sin tenerla que haberla vivido. Gottfried Helnwein's latest exhibition, "Face It", is the artist's first show in his native Austria since 1985. A retrospective of 40 works from the 1970s to the present, it is more shocking than the Royal Academy's infamous "Sensation" of 1997. Helnwein aims to disturb not with, say, an elephant-dung Madonna, as Chris Ofili did then, but with a far more controversial Virgin. Of all his paintings, the most disturbing is Epiphany (1996), for which he dips into our collective memory of Christianity's most famous birth. This Austrian Catholic Nativity scene has no magi bearing gifts. Madonna and child are encircled by five respectful Waffen SS officers palpably in awe of the idealised, kitsch-blonde Virgin. The Christ toddler, who stands on Mary's lap, stares defiantly out of the canvas. Helnwein's baby Jesus is Adolf Hitler.

Gottfried Helnwein (ur. 8 października 1948 roku w Wiedniu) - artysta pochodzenia austriacko-irlandzkiego. Uprawia kilka gałęzi sztuk, od tradycyjnego malarstwa, poprzez fotografię a po perfomance. Helnwein studiował malarstwo na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Wiedniu (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna; Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Wien). Skończył z wyrónieniem (the Master-class prize); otrzymał równie nagrody Kardinal-König prize oraz Theodor-Körner prize.
Jego wczesne prace to przede wszystkim hiper-realistyczne akwarele przedstawiające okaleczone dzieci; motyw ten był często wykorzystywany równie w licznych perfomances w miejscach publicznych. Gottfried Helnwein's Epiphany (Adoration of the Magi) is a strange takeoff on a traditional New Testament theme in art. The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? Helnwein, characteristically, presents us with an ambiguous, haunting image and leaves us to wonder about its meaning. Helnwein's background perhaps helps explain why his often difficult subjects have been interpreted in various, often contradictory, ways by opposing sides of the political debate about World War II. With its huge size, hyperrealist style, and disturbing content, this unsettling work bestows a psychological anxiety accompanied by a strong magnetic pull.
