By in large, I like to stay on the beaten track with website design reviews. I usually pick big corporates that should know better or who have the funds to produce something of high quality. However today’s review focuses on the power of one. The website up for review is that of the extraordinary artist Gottfried Helnwein. Helnwein was born in Vienna but has both Austrian and Irish citizenship, and resides in Tipperary for half of the year. His art is in one word: incredible. I’m not an art critic and I am do not possess the skills to convey the quality of this man’s work so visit the website and judge for yourself.

By all accounts Helnwein is comfortable in the web setting. While his art is known for its shocking and often controversial visuals, he ironically displays the work in a way that adheres to web standards and here-in lies the key. Art should break standards and websites should adhere to standards. Helnwein excels at this whereas as most artists are happy to pedal conventional art on websites that break standards.

Diese umfangreiche Monografie von Könemann, die anlässlich der grossen Helnwein-Retrospektive im Staatlichen Russischen Museum in St. Petersburg, 1997 herausgegeben wurde, ist wahrscheinlich immer noch das informativste Buch für jeden, der sich für das Werk dieses ästhetischen Provokateurs interessiert.

Gottfried Helnwein is incredible. His images are so disturbing, especially with his repeated use of imagery of innocence in perverse situations like wounded children or Donald Duck in dark alleys. Harry Parker III, the Director of Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco says that
"For Helnwein, the child is the symbol of innocence, but also of innocence betrayed. I can now reliably inform you that this is the Virtual Museum of Art, dedicated to the work of Austrian-born artist, Gottfried Helnwein. Those of you into certain forms of metal music may already be familiar with his unsettling images, as his output includes covers and artwork for both Rammstein and Marilyn Manson. He now has an island on which to showcase his work in Second Life. The Museum dominates the island on which it stands, rising to 3 storeys, and stretching across the full width of the sim. Inside it is dark and cool, and the display is large and well constructed. There are several galleries, featuring different phases of Helwein's work. Gottfried Helnwein's latest exhibition, "Face It", is the artist's first show in his native Austria since 1985. A retrospective of 40 works from the 1970s to the present, it is more shocking than the Royal Academy's infamous "Sensation" of 1997. Helnwein aims to disturb not with, say, an elephant-dung Madonna, as Chris Ofili did then, but with a far more controversial Virgin. Of all his paintings, the most disturbing is Epiphany (1996), for which he dips into our collective memory of Christianity's most famous birth. This Austrian Catholic Nativity scene has no magi bearing gifts. Madonna and child are encircled by five respectful Waffen SS officers palpably in awe of the idealised, kitsch-blonde Virgin. The Christ toddler, who stands on Mary's lap, stares defiantly out of the canvas. Helnwein's baby Jesus is Adolf Hitler.

Gottfried Helnwein (ur. 8 października 1948 roku w Wiedniu) - artysta pochodzenia austriacko-irlandzkiego. Uprawia kilka gałęzi sztuk, od tradycyjnego malarstwa, poprzez fotografię a po perfomance. Helnwein studiował malarstwo na Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Wiedniu (Academy of Fine Arts Vienna; Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Wien). Skończył z wyrónieniem (the Master-class prize); otrzymał równie nagrody Kardinal-König prize oraz Theodor-Körner prize.
