Zwei Jahre nach der Eröffnung leidet das Linzer Kunstmuseum Lentos an massivem Besucherschwund. Eine große Ausstellung des in Los Angeles und Irland lebenden Malers Gottfried Helnwein ab März 2006 soll das Haus wieder beleben.
2006 muss die Kurve wieder nach oben zeigen, sonst wird es für die Direktorin eng. Dabei soll ihr Gottfried Helnwein, Meister der Irritation, helfen, der ab März mit seinem Werk zu sehen sein wird: "Seit er vor 20 Jahren aus Österreich weggegangen ist, hat er hier keine große Ausstellung mehr gehabt. Um ihn haben wir mit einer anderen bedeutenden österreichischen Institution gerittert." ...

Helnwein has accepted commissions from Jewish supremacist groups and produced works which denigrate WWII Germany in the conventional and expected way (though Helnwein's representational and emotional vision has an impact far beyond that of most modern artists), but he has also produced works which are more enigmatic, and seem to embody a Jungian, archetypal, and near-religious conception of that period -- though it is certainly likely that Helnwein is merely "helping" Whites, especially Germans, deal with what he might conceive as "demons within." ...

The highlight of the trip for me was going to Gottfried Helnwein's studio- Kevin has been drawing Gottfried's daughter, Mercedes Helnwein (her art is great, as well)- and she invited us to her dad's studio event. Mr. Helnwein had just designed the set and costumes for a big opera in Los Angeles, and the Opera put on this event at his studio- it was pretty crazy. The artist's wet dream- THE studio visit, for sure. We walked into the space- there were opera singers performing, pretty rich people abound and Helwein's enormous paintings EVERYWHERE!!! ...

Marie Antoinette, for example, was obsessed with the idea of pretending to be a simple innocent peasant girl. Her husband built her an entire life-sized fantasy farmhouse and mill with sheep, shepherds and all - and an idealistic landscape shaped around it. Dressed in theatrical shepherdess attire, she could now play "innocent country folk" with her girlfriends. ...

In Richard Strauss' opera, aging aristocrat Marschallin beds the young Octavian. But Octavian's a mezzo-soprano, played by a lady in what opera calls a "trouser role." Helnwein just took the trousers out. In the ad, the women's expressions are tender and their lips mere millimeters apart.
Helnwein isn't surprised by the scuttlebutt in the normally staid opera world.
"I'm used to it," Helnwein said. "It always happens with my work. I don't intend it really, but it happens. I think it has to do with the fact that middle class people usually don't want anything to change. If it could, everything would freeze and stay the same way forever. But artists are very annoying, disturbing guys. They always want to change and mess something up. ...

...There is of course the delicious irony in the third act when we have a female playing a male turns around and portrays a female! Even more ironic, the love interests in the opera could hardly be more heterosexual. Besides the fact that the Marschallin and Ochs are cousins, they also enjoy a passion for much younger members of the opposite sex!
I believe this almost fairy tale opera—a Viennese masquerade if you will—has been besmirched by this ad’s misleading dissemblance. The ad credits Gottfried Helnwein for artwork. I see he is also listed as a production manager. I hope you will show him a copy of this letter.
I will see Der Rosenkavalier—my favorite opera—next month, but I will approach it with trepidation. In Gottes Namen, what have you done to this beloved opera? ...

Bis zum 12.Juni 2005 werden im Wilhelm_Busch_Museeum in Hannover Arbeiten des Künstlers Gottfried Helnwein ausgestellt. Zuletzt wurde er bekannt durch seine Marilyn Manson Fotografien zum Album "The Golden Age of Grotesque". Ähnlich wie H.R. Giger hat Helnwein als Künstler im Metal- / Rockbereich eine Sonderstellung. Bei beiden Künstlern haben Musik und Bild die Provokation gemeinsam. Und da gerade Kinder gerne im Mittelpunkt von Gottfried Helnwein morbiden Bilder sind, ist die Ausstellung nicht unbedingt etwas für empfindliche Menschen. Hier sehen Sie Gottfried Helnwein und Marilyn Manson, zwei absolute Individualisten und extrem eigenwillige Künstler. Ich wünschte jeder Mensch hätte nur ein Zehntel der Kreativität und der Kraft, sein eigenes Leben zu leben und seine eigene Sache zu machen, wie diese beiden hochkarätigen Künstler das tun. Statt dessen wird allerorten eifrig gestorben:
"Die meisten Menschen sterben, ohne je gelebt zu haben. Zum Glück bemerken sie es nicht."

Zielsetzung: Der im Unterricht der Qualifikationsphase vertieft zu behandelnde thematische Schwerpunkt 1 "Bilder vom Menschen" gibt u.a. die Auseinandersetzung mit "Bildern der Entfremdung" und die Inszenierung der menschlichen Figur vor. Bezüge zu dem thematischen Schwerpunkt 2 sind insbesondere durch die für Helnwein charakteristische Einbindung der menschlichen Figur in Raumzusammenhänge gegeben. Eine Annäherung an das Werk Helnweins soll in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit dem sich in den Arbeiten manifestierenden Menschenbild erfolgen.

Went to a giant Robot War downtown the other night, just a few blocks from my place. It was a performance of SRL (Survival Research Laboratories). There was a flame thrower that threw 300 foot streams of flame, a sound cannon that shot visible sonic booms, hovercrafts with piercing talons... it was really good and really loud and im glad i brought ear plugs.
Then yesterday I went to the studio of Gottfried Helnwein, an amazing Austrian artist who is currently designing a piece for the LA Opera. Gottfried's studio was filled with enormous paintings of ancient fetuses and portraits of Marilyn Manson. I showed him some of my short films and then pitched him The 1 Second Film. ...
