Helnwein gilt wie Sie als Provokateur des Kulturbetriebes - haben sich da zwei verwandte Seelen getroffen?
Manson:
Ein Künstler, der nicht provoziert, wird unsichtbar. Kunst die keine starken Reaktionen auslöst, hat keinen Wert. Helnwein hat das verinnerlicht und entspricht damit genau dem Kern meiner Musik. Unsere Zusammenarbeit erschöpft sich nicht darin, dass ein Künstler einem Musiker ein Cover für sein Album malt. Wir schaffen zusammen Kunst, die unseren Gemütszustand wiedergibt.
SPIEGEL:
Helnwein sagt, Sie seien ähnlich einsam wie er.
Manson:
Ganz bestimmt. Es ist übrigens nicht nur schön, sondern auch befremdlich, jemanden zu finden, der tatsächlich das Gleiche liebt wie man selbst. Ich bin gewohnt für meine Ideen verurteilt zu werden - und plötzlich ist da jemand, der mich auf Anhieb versteht. Ich war nie ein geselliger Mensch. It was funny; we released some of the photos without commenting what they were or what we intended to do with them – if they were the cover for The Golden Age of Grotesque or not. Not even our record company knew what they were for. They assumed they were for the cover artwork and got quite angry, "What the fuck should we do with this cover?!?" So I told them not to worry about it; it's not the cover and showed them the one with the Mickey Mouse ears. It freaked them out even more. But that's how I deal with people who think they're the portraits of authority. ...

Zur Einstimmung sah man zunächst einmal Halbwüchsige in HJ-Uniform mit Kopfverband und Mickey-Mouse-Ohren mechanisch durch die Volksbühne marschieren, von links nach rechts und dann wieder zurück. Dabei zogen sie auch stets an der Kunst vorbei, die in den Vorräumen zum Bestaunen an die Wände gehängt worden war. Auf der einen Seite präsentierte Marilyn Manson seine Aquarelle; lustige, kleine, bunte Bilder, die in der Regel Menschen und Tiere zeigten, denen es nicht ganz so gut ging. Manche lächelten irre, anderen fehlten entscheidende Körperteile. Auf der anderen Seite sah man die großformatigen Manson-Porträts des Fotorealisten Gottfried Helnwein. Darauf war Manson mal mit Zylinder, mal mit Mickey-Mouse-Ohren zu sehen. Vor den Bildern hatte sich ein Kamerateam des Musiksenders MTV aufgebaut und interviewte gerade die Bundestagsvizepräsidentin Antje Vollmer. Im Foyer spricht er über seine eigenen Aquarelle und zeigt die morbide faszinierenden Cover-Porträts, die der österreichische Künstler Gottfried Helnwein von ihm gemacht hat. Auf den Fotos trägt der Musiker Micky-Maus-Ohren und schafft es, sogar damit düster auszusehen. Dazu passt eine Performance, bei der Kinder in faschistisch wirkender Kluft mit Maus-Ohren und verbundenen Gesichtern durch das Theater marschieren. Del disagio del pubblico di fronte a bambini non rappresentati come innocenti e ai quali si attribuisca marcatamente un’identità (e una consapevolezza) sessuale è ben conscio l’artista austriaco Gottfried Helnwein che, soprattutto nei lavori su carta, ha creato alcune tra le più potenti e conturbanti rappresentazioni della storia dell’arte, di infanzia abusata. Ma non certo d’abuso da codice penale si tratta. Quel che viene denunciata è la manipolazione puntuale, l’introduzione forzata (The intrusion), a opera degli adulti, nel corpo sociale dell’infanzia, che viene così snaturato, svuotato di quelle naturalissime pulsioni che ci si ostina a non riconoscere, a negare. Di fronte a esse Helnwein non solo non distoglie lo sguardo, non indietreggia, ma ne cattura l’essenza, la forza, e la porge allo spettatore le cui certezze cominciano a vacillare, come avviene all’uomo in The doubting Thomas, inginocchiato di fronte alla bambina e col capo accoccolato sulle sue ginocchia in segno d’abbandono, di prostrazione assoluta. E ancora in Untitled (1993) sono messi in scena, al contempo, il riconoscimento della “fluidità”, dell’inafferrabilità infantile e la volontà di costringerle entro una fissità rassicurante. Numerosi sono anche i lavori, sia fotografici che pittorici, in cui bambine vengono rappresentate con delle fasciature che ne coprono, anche integralmente, il capo e le mani (la tattilità) tentando, attraverso la recisione sensoriale, di impedirne il contatto “immediato” col mondo, la presa sul mondo. Tentando, cioè, di ricacciare indietro quella sensualità contagiosa, incontenibile, che i sensi infantili potrebbero proiettare su di esso (cfr. Beautiful victim II e il più volte ripreso Child of light). ...

The Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein is well aware of the discomfort the public feels when confronted with images of children not represented as innocents but to whom a powerful sexual identity (and an awareness) is designated. In his work, and especially his paper drawings, he has created some of the most powerful and disturbing representations of abused childhood in history of art. We are not talking about the form of abuse commonly described in the penal code. By altering or removing the inbred pulsation that spurs us to stubbornly refuse or deny what we do not recognise, the manipulations and interferences (The Intrusion) adults perform on the social body of childhood are denounced. ...
